Greenrise Recreation Reserve and Arboretum Trail

Greenrise Recreation Reserve, just south of Penola's town centre, wraps a dry lake bed in an arboretum of more than 6,000 labelled trees. Wattle Range Council manages it, and dogs stay on lead.

Lead rules

Council rules require dogs on a lead no longer than 2 metres on public reserves like this one, unless an area is signed for free running.

The walk

About 1,200 metres of arboretum paths join a broader 2.4 km loop around the reserve, on formed gravel and dirt.

The trees cover 110 species, including big native red gums, so shade is generous. Bins sit near the picnic and RV areas, but dog waste stations are sparse, so bring bags.

Parking is ample, though some areas get soft and wet in winter. There are toilets, gas barbecues and picnic tables.

Pepsi: There is little drinking water out on the track. Pack a bottle and a bowl for the loop.

When to go

The shade makes it a good summer walk, and in winter the parking areas are the thing to watch. With a free self-contained RV area on site, it suits travellers passing through with a dog.
