Boyne River Rest Area

The riverside walk in Benaraby is at the public campgrounds by the Boyne River, also known as the Boyne River Rest Area, off the Bruce Highway. There is no formal Benaraby Recreation Reserve track, but short paths lead down to the river and dogs are welcome on lead.

Lead rules

Gladstone Regional Council requires dogs to be on lead at all times in public spaces and council parkland, and the rest area is no exception.

The walk

Short tracks of natural earth and grass head toward the riverbank, with concrete paths near the amenities. Expect shady native trees, grassy clearings and a few quirky local sculptures along the way.

It is a stretch-the-legs stop more than a long walk, which makes it a good break on a highway drive.

Water and shade

Taps sit near the picnic tables, bins are provided, and mature trees shade much of the ground. There are public toilets and plenty of free parking, with room for vans and trailers.

Max: Do not detour to nearby Lake Awoonga with your dog. The recreation area there is a wildlife sanctuary and pets are banned.

The shade makes it a comfortable pause on a warm day, and the short paths suit older dogs.
