Barracks Flat to Suspension Bridge Walk

From Barracks Flat to Queanbeyan's suspension bridge, a concrete shared path follows the river past native trees and plenty of birdlife. Dogs can come along, but only on a lead.

Lead rules

Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council requires dogs on a lead at all times along the river path. If yours needs a proper run, the council's signed off-lead area on High Street, opposite Thurralily Street, is the local option.

The walk

The path is flat, stable and mud-free, part of the wider Queanbeyan Riverside Walk between Karabar and the town end. It takes prams as easily as dogs, and it is a social route, with runners and other dog walkers crossing paths close to town.

Parking is near Barracks Flat Park on Barracks Flat Drive, with street access closer to the bridge.

Water and shade

There is no dog water on the path itself, so carry a bottle; cafés in town are the easiest refill. Shade is sparse, with scattered eucalypts and pines, and bins are more common near the park entries than midway.

Max: The open stretches cop full sun. In summer, go early and pack water, because there is nothing for dogs along the path.

Make a day of it

Finish at the town end with a stop at The Mill Cafe or Thirty 4 Café & Restaurant.

Mornings are the pick in warm months. Flat and sealed, it suits older dogs and anyone after an easy, steady walk.
