J W Thomson Reserve off Saxon Street is a Doncaster park that combines open green space with a fenced sports ground, and the fenced oval is where the off-leash run happens. That enclosure is the draw: it gives an active dog a bounded space to sprint and play ball that most of Manningham's unfenced reserves cannot.

The dog setup

Dogs are off-leash on the fenced sports ground under effective voice control, but only when events, training or matches are not on. When soccer or football is using the oval, the surrounding grass is calmer but stays on-lead. Manningham's conditions apply elsewhere in the reserve: leads on at the children's playground, on the paths and in the car park, waste picked up immediately, and current lead zones confirmed against council signage. There is a pavilion, benches, a shelter with BBQ facilities and a playground on site, but no water tap, so bring your own water and bowl.

Max: check whether a training session is running before you unclip. The fence is the whole point of this park, and it only helps when the oval is actually free.

Getting there and parking

The reserve is at Saxon Street, Doncaster, with on-street parking along Saxon Street and buses running along Doncaster Road and the nearby main roads. Westfield Doncaster and the Eastern Freeway corridors are a few minutes away, so it is an easy stop on a trip through the suburb.

Worth knowing

Weekday mornings are the quietest window; weekend mornings and weekday late afternoons after school pickup are the busiest. For a post-run coffee, Stables Provedore Cafe keeps a dog menu and Secret Grounds Cafe is a short drive away with welcoming outdoor tables.
