Home Economics is a daytime cafe on the ground floor of Balam Balam Place, the creative and community precinct that fills the block between Phoenix and Saxon Streets in Brunswick. It sits among artist studios and the Blak Dot Gallery, and the kitchen runs on a domestic-arts ethos: house-made ferments, preserves, granola and daily bakes. Dogs are welcome through the precinct's open-air courtyard seating rather than inside the cafe itself.

The dog setup

Dogs join you in the shared outdoor space of Balam Balam Place, with registered assistance animals the exception indoors. There are spots to secure a leash at the edge of the courtyard if you are ordering takeaway, and the open paving gives a settled dog room without blocking the flow between studios and gallery. Keep dogs on lead, clean up after them, and bring a water bowl on warm days since the dog area is fully open-air. It is best on a fine day for exactly that reason.

The vibe and the menu

The signature is the elevated cheesy toast, often served with house-made sambal or rotating preserves from the larder, alongside brekky buns, hearty sandwiches, galettes and matcha. Hours run 8am to 3pm daily. The precinct setting makes it an easy, unharried coffee stop, and it doubles as a browsing trip for local art and events on the precinct calendar.

Getting there and parking

Phoenix Street parking is limited and mostly short-term, so the simpler way in is on foot: the cafe is a short walk from tram and bus routes along Lygon Street and Victoria Street. Coming from Sydney Road, it is an easy ten-minute stroll with a dog on lead.

Close by with the dogs

For a proper run before or after, Gilpin Park Fenced Dog Park in Brunswick West is the nearest fully fenced option, with double-gated entry and separate sections for small dogs. Merri-bek rules apply en route, so keep the lead on through the streets and stay clear of playgrounds.
