Urunga Dog beach

Urunga Dog Beach is the southern stretch of Urunga Beach on the mid north coast of NSW, running from south of the river mouth breakwall to the 4WD access point locals call the sand mines. It is a genuine off-leash beach, not just a tolerated one, and the wide open sand makes it one of the better free-run spots on this stretch of coast.

Leash status

Off-leash applies only within that southern section, from the breakwall down to the sand mines access, under Bellingen Shire Council rules. Elsewhere in Urunga, including the famous boardwalk, dogs must stay on-leash. A four-dog-per-person limit applies in both on-leash and off-leash areas, and off-leash dogs still need to be under effective control, which means coming back the first time you call. Dogs are not allowed in children's play areas, food preparation areas or protected environmental zones.

Water and terrain

A wide, sandy beach backed by dunes, best run at low tide when there is the most sand to work with. Shade is limited to the dune line, so there is little relief from the sun once you are out on the flat. Waste bags and bins sit near the main entrance points, and there is no drinking water on the beach, so bring your own on a hot day.

Max: low tide gives you the most distance between the dune access track and the water line, which is where I would rather be with the four-dog leash limit in play.

Getting there and parking

From the Pacific Highway, take the Urunga exit and follow Hungry Heads Road through town to the southern end of the beach. Parking is an unsealed area near the dunes, and with public transport limited, driving is the practical option.

Worth knowing

This beach is also a 4WD access point, so vehicles do use the sand. Keep dogs clear of the dune access track, especially on weekends when both dogs and vehicles are busiest. The breakwall end narrows the usable sand at high tide, which is another reason to time a run for the falling water.

When to go

Go at low tide for the widest run, and early morning or late afternoon to dodge the 4WD traffic and the worst of the sun on paws. It is a beach for dogs that need real off-leash distance rather than a small fenced yard.
