Tathra Beach Off-Leash Area

The designated off-leash area at Tathra Beach is an 820-metre stretch of open coastline in Tathra, NSW, offering 24/7 off-leash access. The single defining reason to make the trip: round-the-clock freedom on a wide, sandy surf beach, bounded by clear council lines so there is no guessing where your dog can and cannot run.

The rules. Off-leash access is permitted 24 hours a day, seven days a week within the signed boundaries. The zone runs south from a line drawn east of the Tathra Beach Country Club entrance to a line drawn east from the northern end of the Tathra Beachfront Holiday Park. Dogs must be under effective voice command at all times, even while off-leash. The southern end of the beach near the surf club is not part of this zone. Dogs are prohibited on patrolled areas during specified, signposted seasonal times, so check the signs on arrival. Outside the off-leash zone, leashes are required in all parking areas, on the footpath, and at nearby Lions Park. Owners must pick up after their dogs.

The water and terrain. This is an open ocean surf beach backed by sand dunes. The sand is open and expansive at low tide, ideal for long runs and steady swims. This is open ocean, not a sheltered bay, so strong currents and surf conditions are always a factor, especially for dogs who are not strong swimmers. Assess the swell before letting your dog head in for a swim.

What is there. On-site parking is available at the Tathra Beach Country Club entrance, near the northern boundary of the off-leash area. Public toilets are located near the Surf Club and near the Beachfront Holiday Park. Dog waste bags and disposal bins are provided along the beach access pathways, so you will not need to carry bags out with you at the end of your session.

Getting there. The address is Tathra-Bermagui Road, Tathra NSW 2550. Drive via the Princes Highway and turn onto Tathra-Bermagui Road. Additional access is available via Andy Poole Drive. Park at the Country Club entrance for the most direct walk to the northern boundary.

Watch-outs. The two persistent factors here are surf and seasonal patrol restrictions. Check the signposted seasonal times before you plan your visit, as dogs are not permitted on patrolled stretches during those windows. At high tide, the sandy area narrows considerably, which compresses dogs and people into a smaller strip and can trigger friction. Peak crowds gather on weekends and summer mornings between 9am and 11am, and again from 3pm to 5pm. Early morning before 8am or evenings are the quiet windows, when the sand is at its widest at low tide.

When to go. Arrive at low tide during the early morning window before 8am. This combination gives your dog the maximum sand area to run on, avoids the 9am to 11am rush, and delivers calmer, more manageable light for assessing surf conditions before you commit to a swim. Good for confident, fit dogs who can handle open water and owners who follow signposted boundaries.
