Tathra Beach Off-Leash Area

The Tathra Beach Off-Leash Area is a designated stretch of open surf beach on the Sapphire Coast, about 30 minutes south of Bega on the NSW far south coast. The zone runs south from a line drawn east of the Tathra Beach Country Club entrance down to a line east from the northern end of the Tathra Beachfront Holiday Park, and it is leash-free around the clock, which puts it among the more flexible dog beaches on the coast.

Leash status

Off-leash access applies 24 hours a day within the signed boundaries under Bega Valley Shire Council's dog walking rules, with dogs under the effective control of a competent person at all times. The freedom has edges: the zone does not extend onto the sand dunes, dogs are prohibited on patrolled sections during signposted seasonal times, leashes are required in parking areas, on footpaths and at nearby Lions Park, and waste has to be picked up. Bags and bins are provided along the beach access paths.

Water and terrain

This is open ocean, not a sheltered bay. Wide sand at low tide gives room for long runs, and the surf suits dogs who like a proper swim, but currents and swell are always in play. Read the conditions before letting a dog go out past its depth, and keep weak swimmers in the shallows near the wash.

Max: If the swell is up or the water is churning, keep it to shallow play. Strong currents can pull even a capable dog sideways before they realise they are drifting.

Getting there and parking

Turn off the Princes Highway onto Tathra-Bermagui Road, with additional access via Andy Poole Drive. Park at the Tathra Beach Country Club entrance for the most direct walk onto the northern end of the off-leash zone. Public toilets sit near the surf club and near the Beachfront Holiday Park.

Worth knowing

The two things to check on arrival are the surf and the signage: seasonal patrol restrictions move with the swim season, and the southern end of the beach near the surf club is outside the off-leash zone. Dogs are also prohibited around the Tathra Wharf itself. Bring water and shade if you are settling in, since facilities are back from the sand.

When to go

Early morning and late afternoon are the quiet windows, and with 24-hour access you are not racing a curfew. Summer days bring swimmers and holiday crowds closer to the patrolled southern end, so the Country Club end stays the calmer bet.
